A group of “experienced and well-prepared” bushwalkers have had to call in the rescue helicopter after one suffered a medical emergency while descending Frenchmans Cap.

The group activated their EPIRB just before midday on Saturday, with bad weather hampering the helicopter’s arrival until early afternoon.

The onboard paramedic and crew assessed the injured walker but were unable to transport them immediately to the Royal Hobart Hospital due to worsening weather conditions.

“Due to deteriorating weather the helicopter, crew and injured walker were forced to remain overnight at Tahune Hut,” police said.

“An overnight weather change enabled the helicopter to safely transport the injured walker to waiting medical staff in Hobart for treatment.”

Police praised the “behaviour and preparedness” of the group and used the incident to remind walkers of the importance of being well-equipped for unpredictable weather.

They emphasised that all bushwalkers should carry a registered and functional EPIRB and keep emergency contacts informed of their planned itinerary.
