Coast Guard airlifts 2 men from capsized catamaran off Haleiwa

The U.S. Coast Guard were able to find and rescue two boaters whose catamaran capsized by tracing their personal locator beacon.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The U.S. Coast Guard airlifted two men whose 10-foot catamaran capsized approximately 11 miles off Haleiwa Tuesday.

USCG airplane and helicopter crews from Air Station Barbers Point were able to locate the men in the water with the capsized vessel.

Rescuers safely hoisted them and flew them to the air station in Kapolei.

Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center watchstanders received a personal locator beacon alert at 11:52 a.m., indicating a position along the north side of Oahu.

Watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast, and the airplane and helicopter crews already airborne at the time were diverted to assist.

“Registering your personal locator beacon can mean the difference between a quick rescue and an extended search at sea,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Aaron Lenk, command duty officer, Oceania District.

At 1:45 p.m., the crews located the capsized vessel and hoisted the two men from the water.

No injuries were reported.
