Ethiopia Eyes Membership in Global Satellite Search and Rescue Network
October 1, 2025

Ethiopia is exploring membership in COSPAS-SARSAT, an international satellite-based search and rescue system, aiming to strengthen its aviation safety and emergency response capabilities.
The discussions took place on the sidelines of the 42nd International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly, where Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority Director General, Yohannes Abera, met with the Secretary General of COSPAS-SARSAT on September 30, 2025. The talks focused on technical cooperation and integration into the global framework that detects and locates aircraft, vessels, and individuals in distress.
COSPAS-SARSAT, established in 1988, operates with 45 member nations and relies on satellite detection of emergency signals transmitted by 406 MHz distress beacons. Since its inception, the system has assisted in rescuing over 63,000 people globally, with more than 3,100 individuals rescued in 2023 alone. Ethiopia currently participates in the system through its assigned beacon registration code, 624, reflecting its ongoing engagement in international search and rescue operations.
Membership would allow Ethiopia to receive real-time alerts from aircraft in distress, facilitating faster and more effective rescue operations. It would also align the country with international aviation safety standards, enhance disaster preparedness, and provide opportunities for technical collaboration and knowledge transfer with other member states.
