Four people have been rescued from the ocean off Hillarys after their boat capsized on Sunday afternoon.

Disaster struck about 1.05pm, with the skipper of the boat activating an EPIRB device to alert authorities they were in trouble.

Water police in Fremantle received the distress call and immediately sent emergency services, including police air wing and marine rescue, to the sinking vessel.

Police say their plane was the first to arrive where they found the boat submerged with three people holding onto the hull of the vessel, and one nearby on a surf board.

Marine Rescue volunteers were directed to the boat where they safely rescued all four people.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known, with police expected to give an update later in the day.
