RLS functionality: a revolution in rescue safety
October 28, 2024
Whether for military or civilian tracking equipment, the Return Link Service adapts to the specific needs of each user. Configurable and highly reliable, this technology ensures a rapid, personalized response, guaranteeing the safety and peace of mind of teams in the field, even under the most extreme conditions.

What is RLS?
Return Link Service is a two-way communication technology built into some personal locator beacons. When the beacon is activated, it sends a distress signal to orbiting satellites associated with international search and rescue satellite systems. Once this signal has been received and processed by the relevant authorities, a confirmation message is sent back to the beacon. This lets the user know that his request for help has been taken into account, ensuring that help is on the way, and reducing uncertainty in critical situations.
Why is the RLS crucial?
In distress situations, uncertainty can increase stress and complicate decision-making. RLS functionality provides peace of mind by confirming that the distress message has been received, thus reducing the psychological pressure on individuals in critical situations.

Military applications
RLS functionality is particularly useful in a military context. The technology is already integrated in beacons such as the SARBE 6-406G EVO RLS, but it is on its way to becoming a standard in safety devices worldwide.
Integration into the Cospas-Sarsat program
The Cospas-Sarsat system is an international satellite network dedicated to the detection of distress signals, providing worldwide coverage. The RLS works in conjunction with this system, offering real-time interaction with users, and is subject to regulation by local authorities:Â Where Can I Buy an RLS-Enabled Beacon? – International COSPAS-SARSAT. In 2024, Safran enhanced this functionality with its new generations of personal locator beacons, further improving the safety of armed forces and civilian operators.
