Two injured in gyrocopter crash in South Canterbury

Two people sustained minor injuries when their gyrocopter crashed near Haldon Rd, close to Burkes Pass, in South Canterbury on Thursday.

Police media team member Jeremy said two occupants with minor injuries were taken to Timaru Hospital as a precaution.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson Alex Norris said one fire crew from Fairlie and one from Lake Takapō/Tekapo attended the incident, where they assisted St John and police.

Civil Aviations Authority’s (CAA) principal advisor communications Mike Richards said it had been notified of the crash.

“The pilot activated his personal locator beacon which alerted the Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCCNZ) and rescue services attended the scene promptly,” Richards said.

“The CAA is working with the pilot to understand the circumstances of the accident and at this stage we won’t be conducting a field investigation.”
